Sporting events are commonly marked with enthusiasm, cheering and spirit. This past weekend's Big Green Scream introduced a new element to sporting arena: environmental awareness.
Sustainable Skidmore worked with the Athletic Department, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and the Environmental Action Club to add an eco-friendly element to this past weekend's festivities. The Athletic Department planned most of the weekend.
Friday was senior day for both teams, and the Sports and Recreation Center was packed with students and the families of many team members. Saturday featured both men's and women's basketball games.
Sustainable Skidmore worked to ensure the event was as environmentally friendly as possible. The group added recycling cans along with the usual garbage cans; team members drank from a large cooler rather than from plastic water bottles; and linen, not paper, table clothes were used throughout the athletic center.
Students and guests were given other opportunities to positively impact the environment, such as planting sunflower seeds.
"My hope is that as we work with more events on campus, more groups will start doing these things on their own," said Erica Fuller, Campus Sustainability Coordinator.
Prizes were included in the weekend's events. Fans who answered recycle trivia questions correctly at Saturday's basketball games received prizes from the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Organizers also handed out free reusable shopping bags to the first 350 fans to arrive.
Tables were set up outside the gym to give Skidmore students and faculty opportunities to take the Greenhouse Gas Inventory Commuting and Environmental Awareness Survey. The survey will help quantify Skidmore's greenhouse gas emissions, helping to reduce the college's environmental footprint.
"It's nice to know that Skidmore is always considering how we impact our environment," Shomik Ghosh '12 said. "It was a great way to incorporate eco-friendliness into an all-campus event."
Sustainable Skidmore has more in store for the rest of the school year. The organization will host a pre-Earth Day Celebration on Case Green on April 18 as well as events throughout the week to celebrate and raise awareness. The end of the semester will feature the Give and GO! Program in which all belongings students leave behind at the end of the year will be collected and donated to local charities.
