Basketball begins with win

Following a disappointing 3-11 in conference and 8-17 overall finish last season, Skidmore's men's basketball team is looking to rebound this year. A poll conducted on the Liberty League's Web site placed Skidmore sixth out of eight teams, ahead of only Union and Vassar.

NCAAs over for field hockey, women's soccer

Field hockey and women's soccer both saw their seasons come to an end last weekend, losing to Tufts and SUNY Oneonta respectively. Going into their Nov. 15 match-up against the fourth ranked Jumbos, the field hockey team was ranked ninth in the nation and had been riding a 10 game winning-streak to a 17-3 record.

Swimmers building momentum

The college's men's and the women's swimming and diving teams are off to a rough start. The men are 0-4 and the women are 1-4 after defeating SUNY Potsdam. The teams have also lost four swimmers to injuries and absences due to study abroad programs. "We're starting to rebound, however, and we look forward to getting stronger throughout the season," said Head Coach Jill Greenleaf.

Professional athletes, just like Clint Eastwood or Ving Rhames, should not be crying. Sports figures are suddenly the softest people on the planet. They win, they cry. They lose, they cry. They let down their team, they cry. They retire, they cry. We have long seen the days since Vito Corleone whacking a young, bawling Johnny Fontaine in the face during the opening scenes of "The Godfather" (1972) and telling him to, "act like a man.
